JOHN PLAYER SPECIAL
Original artwork by Maarten Eivind, 2025.
This piece presents a solitary figure caught between strength and self-destruction. The character appears composed, almost formal, yet fragile beneath the surface — a quiet tension between control and collapse.
The cigarette becomes both symbol and contradiction, suggesting habit, identity, and the illusion of resilience. There is a dark humour in the message, but also an underlying sense of vulnerability and consequence.
Painted on cardboard, the work combines a clean surface with raw, expressive brushwork. The bold blue background creates contrast, while the red heart introduces a striking focal point — a sign of life, emotion, and exposure within an otherwise controlled exterior.
The composition reflects on image, identity, and the stories we tell ourselves. Like much of Eivind’s work, it moves between pop art, street aesthetics, and psychological tension.
The artwork is presented behind glass in a frame, giving it a refined finish while preserving its raw expression.
